Basic Function

Aramco’s Sensors Development Team in Houston develops better solutions to measurement challenges in the upstream oil and gas business.  Our work includes techniques for multiphase flow measurement at the wellhead and downhole, sensors for measuring density and rheology of oilfield fluids, sensors for emissions monitoring, and robotic vehicles to carry our sensors into wells or around facilities.

We are seeking a Lab Technician Specialist to setup and conduct tests of our sensors and vehicles in high-pressure, high-temperature test chambers, in multiphase flow loops, and in test wells and producing wells around Houston and in Saudi Arabia.   The qualified applicant should also be experienced in and able to teach others about the fabrication and assembly of mechanical systems using hand tools, machine tools, and 3D printers.   Experience with reading electrical diagrams and assembly of electrical systems is a plus.

Safety is essential in all we do, and the qualified applicant should have experience with the elements of an effective safety program within our Team, including Job Safety Analysis for lab and field operations, safety observations and near-miss reporting, training, and initiatives to keep safety at the forefront of everyone’s mind.  Experience with high-pressure, high-temperature, explosive environments, and mechanical and electrical safety is required.  Experience with the safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals is a plus.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Setup and conduct tests on field instruments and downhole tools in high-pressure, high-temperature test chambers, multiphase flow loops, and wells.
  • Read mechanical drawings.  Fabricate mechanical parts using hand tools, powered machine tools, and 3D printers.  Assemble complicated mechanical systems.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds.  Knowledge of SolidWorks or other CAD software preferred.
  • Read electrical diagrams.  Assemble electronic systems and install sensors and wiring.
  • Ensure the safe and proficient use of tools and test facilities, including developing and communicating JSA’s, establishing workshop rules and policies, providing instruction on how to use tools and facilities, writing standard operating procedures for new equipment, and evaluating and certifying colleagues on operation of powered equipment. 
  • Place orders and approve invoices in computerized procurement system.
  • Maintain organization of mechanical testing facilities and work areas.
  • Maintain stock of raw materials in the work areas.
  • Some travel in the USA, such as for training, technical conferences, or field tests may be required.  Occasional (<5%) travel to Saudi Arabia may be required to support field installations of our instruments.
  • Works as a team member, under general supervision of a responsible scientist or engineer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • Associates degree in Applied Technology, or three (3) years college training in engineering or physics or equivalent competency.  Bachelor‘s degree in related technical discipline preferred.
  • Twelve (12) years industrial research lab experience.  Complete familiarity with standard laboratory practices.
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined.  Good interpersonal and communication skills.  Proficient technical writing skills.
  • Employee must have a valid driver license and a three (3) year clean driving record if required by the position.  Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.
