Our Houston Research Center focuses on research and innovation in geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, production technology, drilling, and sensors development to advance the discovery and recovery of oil and gas. Located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nation’s leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.

Basic Function:

Draft patent applications and other documents during all stages of the patent prosecution process with the US Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) and with foreign patent offices. Take invention disclosures, coordinate and correspond with inventors and lawyers. Conduct and analyze the results of prior art searches; and maintain knowledge of the latest patent laws in order to assist lawyers with drafting legal documents. Incumbent should be a licensed US patent agent.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to researchers throughout the intellectual property protection process
  • Draft/prepare and prosecute patent applications to ensure compliance with USPTO
  • Conduct innovation capture and invention disclosure sessions with inventors
  • Conduct prior art searches on invention disclosures
  • Organize regular patent committee meetings to review patent activities, make patent operational decisions and report activities to management through dashboards
  • Assist in defining and implementing on the patent strategy for mitigating patent risk and leveraging the patent portfolio to meet business goals
  • Stay current with patent law changes and develop best practices
  • Observe safety rules, take action on hazards and report these items to Unit supervisor
  • Maintain records; initiate or process necessary forms and reports as necessary
  • Perform all other confidential projects or tasks as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or engineering and relevant Oil and Gas industry experience
  • USPTO Patent Bar Registration required, or equivalent knowledge, qualification to sit for the Patent Bar
  • Four (4) to six (6) years’ patent preparation and prosecution experience with experience in prosecuting in Oil and Gas industry
  • Must have proficiency with USPTO systems
  • Must have understanding of U.S. and foreign patent laws
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
