Production Technology Lead (329818)

Our Houston Research Center focuses on research and innovation in geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, production technology, drilling, and sensors development to advance the discovery and recovery of oil and gas. Located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nation’s leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.

Basic Function

Lead, direct and supervise a team of engineers, chemists and lab technicians that perform research and development in the area of upstream production technologies. The R&D scope focuses on improved oil and gas recovery in the near wellbore area. This includes: carbonate stimulation, hydraulic fracturing, conformance control, scale and corrosion mitigation and geomechanics.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate major studies in the areas of: carbonate stimulation, hydraulic fracturing, conformance control, scale and corrosion mitigation and geomechanics. These studies are based upon objectives and requirements established by management by interpreting scope, initiating new studies or applied technical work as required. Direct and perform all phases of the study through formal summary reports and presentation to management and counterpart technical staff
  • Mentor researchers, review their work and assist in their training
  • Assign tasks to lab technicians and monitor their daily work on R&D projects
  • Present team plans, R&D outcome and overall progress to both ASC and SAO management
  • Prepare, plan and oversee budget for the Unit
  • Perform the annual performance appraisal process for R&D staff
  • Establish and understand the operational challenges faced by SAO Engineers and initiate the appropriate studies to address these challenges
  • Place roadmaps within ASC for production technology research and developmentto meet SAO objectives
  • Recommend initiation of new or existing studies and related technical research toward improvement on operating efficiencies and reduction of unit cost
  • Make final review of accuracy and nature of data for release/publications to safeguard the company’s best interest
  • Remain current on research and development in production technology in North America and other foreign countries
  • Initiate and conduct original and genuine research projects
  • Provide opportunity for continued advancement of individuals of outstanding technical capability who make substantial and essential contributions on an individual basis
  • Specify design criteria and relevant operating parameters for development of Bl's and/or new projects
  • Participate in project technical reviews and examine proposals for new or changed operating procedures to ensure efficient and economic operations
  • Conduct economic studies on cost analysis as appropriate to resolve alternative causes of action
  • Originate ideas for improvements, develop a basis for required field testing and Management review, analyze results and recommend new or changed procedures and/or facilities
  • Recommend, design and oversee suitable outside investigations to resolve problems which exceed current engineering knowledge
  • Represent Saudi Aramco in technical contacts with Shareholders and SAG representatives dealing with company procedures or proposed operations
  • Make presentations to Executive Management, to Shareholder Program Review or to various Shareholder Technical Meetings, as appropriate
  • Represent Aramco in dealings with manufacturers, vendors, outside consultants, etc.
  • Conduct seminars, prepare manuals and train and develop Aramco engineers and operating personnel
  • Participate in technical societies and technical groups
  • Represent Aramco on industry committees or specialized groups as appropriate
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • BS in engineering or equivalent technical field required; BS & MS in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering or chemistry preferred; MS is desirable but not required in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry; PhD preferred; intensive industry training including appropriate specialized courses and seminars is expected as well as industry recognition; PhD desireable
  • Minimum twenty (20) years of related experience required, including ten (10) years of intensive experience in his/her specialty ; would consider candidates with minimum fifteen (15) years of related experience
  • Active in related professional societies and will have achieved professional recognition through publications, committee activities, etc.
  • Must have received a higher level of industrial recognition, such as committee chairmanships, appointment as "distinguished lecturer", etc.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and be able to communicate and comprehend both orally and in writing, accurately, clearly and concisely in English at the high level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must have the ability to prepare highly technical reports and memoranda and be able to make oral and graphic presentation to all levels of management
  • Must have a high degree of intelligence, imagination and comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of Petroleum Engineering for the initiation, development, and completion of major engineering studies
  • Position requires a unique approach and solution to difficult and diversified engineering problems
  • Must be clearly recognized by both his/her supervisors and colleagues as thoroughly qualified and highly competent in his/her area of expertise
  • Must have demonstrated ability to communicate ideas clearly to work effectively with others, and to utilize his/her technical knowledge to achieve practical results
  • ASC and Saudi Aramco Management must have confidence in his/her judgment and recommendations
  • Due to prior contacts and/or industry recognition, Shareholder representatives, SAG personnel and other outside contacts should also recognize his/her technical expertise
  • Must be able to represent ASC and Saudi Aramco effectively in such contacts and command technical respect
  • Recognized as an outstanding expert, must have repeatedly demonstrated his/her ability to employ his/her expertise effectively to achieve practical Aramco objectives
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic and the ability to adhere to company work hours, policies and standard business etiquette
  • Must be able to travel to meetings and seminars in other locations located in offices and hotels worldwide
