Overview

Aramco Americas is building a new state-of-the-art research center in Houston that will focus on CO2 capture, carbon materials, hydrogen, low carbon-impact liquid fuels, renewables & storage and artificial intelligence in energy. The center will take low TRL research results and develop them to TRL 5-7. 

SCOPE:

Aramco Americas is seeking senior carbon material specialists to drive innovation in sustainable carbon materials. This role focuses on developing cost-effective productions of carbon fibers and/or carbon nanotubes and/or graphene from hydrocarbon feedstocks; Key responsibilities include advancing materials with superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties to support energy transitions and benefit energy sector. The candidate will be also responsible of establishing partnerships with national and international organizations to ensure effective commercialization of technological developments. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background and proven project management expertise.

 PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Work with research organizations and manufacturers to identify technical gaps and challenges that hinder vast penetration of carbon materials in the energy sector.
  • Conduct technical feasibility studies and design R&D strategies
  • Launch research projects, lead lab technicians/junior scientists/engineers and engage external partners to advance the technology readiness level of the targeted developments.
  • Project planning, execution, implementation and data analysis, as well as liaising with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration with the ongoing technology developments
  • Train junior scientists/engineers while remaining current with engineering and scientific technological developments of Carbon materials synthesis/manufacturing using a variety of precursors and conventional/advanced manufacturing processes.
  • Maintains and updates his/her working knowledge of applicable state-of- the-art laboratory instrumentation.
  • Provide and manage a safe, accident-free laboratory environment.  Follow all company safety rules in performing job duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of R&D experience in carbon materials synthesis, including at least five (5) years of industrial experience in the areas of carbon materials synthesis/application/manufacturing.
  • Skilled in identifying technical challenges related to carbon materials manufacturing, and launching new research projects to tackle these challenges, such as developing new synthetic methods and fabrication procedures for carbon materials technology with enhanced performance.
  • Ability to set corporate R&D strategies and connecting key players and establishing new business partnerships.
  • Ability to identify competencies gaps and build/lead R&D teams.
  • Experience in project management, including milestone tracking; project finance and contracts development; as well as technology licensing and commercialization.
  • Effective leadership skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships with customers.
  • Strong tract record of scientific publications and intellectual property development is preferred.
  • Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial mindset in the application to technology development in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to publish papers in highly recognized journals, present research outcomes in international events, and secure patents based on novel research results.
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.

BUSINESS CONTACTS:

  • Contacts as appropriate to his/her needs, all levels within Saudi Aramco and its subsidiaries and operating departments in discussions relating to specific technical problems.  In civil engineering applications, the incumbent has daily contacts with both Company engineering principals and with contractor engineers.
  • Interact with industry and academia through society activities, Joint Industry Projects, partnerships, and consortia.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

  • Operates standard office equipment, including but not limited to personal computers, calculators, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.
  • Reads and comprehends published, handwritten, and typewritten materials, company forms, and computer printouts.
  • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and database functions in the Windows environment. 
  • Travels to meetings, seminars, and to vendor offices in Dhahran, Houston, and throughout North America
  • The job requires the typical physical demands of a research center environment and is normally performed at an assigned global research center in Detroit-MI, Cambridge-MA or Houston-TX.  These GRC’s support research operations ranging from general laboratories to Pilot Plant and high hazard laboratories dealing with combustible gasses and liquids, hydrogen sulfide, high temperatures and high pressures.  The facilities will be ventilated and air-conditioned, well-lighted laboratory/office buildings that meets building, occupational health & safety and facility access codes.
